Yes, there are wolves in Georgia. In fact, the state is home to the only known wild population of red wolves in the eastern United States. These critically endangered animals were once common throughout the southeastern U.S., but they were nearly wiped out by the mid-1900s due to hunting and habitat loss. A captive breeding program was established in the 1970s, and in 1987, the first reintroduction of red wolves into the wild took place in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. In 1998, reintroduction efforts expanded to include the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and North Carolina.
