In a tragic incident, three people were killed in a shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The suspect, who remains unidentified, was engaged and killed by police in a shootout.

The incident unfolded this morning when reports of shots fired on the UNLV campus prompted a swift response from law enforcement. Campus police, in particular, responded to additional reports of shots near the Student Union building.

The university urged students to evacuate to safety, employing the “RUN-HIDE-FIGHT” protocol commonly used in active shooter situations in the United States.

During a press conference, Adam Garcia, the university police chief, revealed that two campus officers engaged the suspect in a shootout, resulting in the suspect’s death.

The motive behind the shooting remains unknown at this time, as stated by Kevin McMahill, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department sheriff.

Tragically, one person is in critical condition at a local hospital, while another victim is in stable condition. Four individuals were taken to the hospital for panic attacks, and two police officers received treatment for minor injuries.

The impact of the incident reached beyond the university, affecting air travel as a ground stop was briefly issued at Harry Reid International Airport, citing security reasons. The airport urged travelers to check their flight status, with roadways around the area closed due to police activity.

President Joe Biden issued a statement, expressing condolences for the “horrific act of gun violence” on yet another college campus. Mayor Carolyn Goodman described the news as “tragic and heart-breaking,” offering prayers for everyone affected.

Emergency responders, including the FBI and ATF, are assisting local police in the investigation. A family reunification center has been established at the Las Vegas Convention Center by the Clark County Fire Department.

As a result of the incident, UNLV and all other southern Nevada System of Higher Education institutions will remain closed for the rest of the day, with the UNLV campus also closed on Thursday and Friday.
