It was a creation of Tarre Vizsla™, a remarkable warrior who achieved the unique distinction of becoming the first Mandalorian to be knighted as a Jedi Knight™.
Tarre Vizsla’s legacy didn’t end there. He rose to become the ruler of Mandalore™ itself and laid the foundation for House Vizsla, an influential Mandalorian faction dedicated to preserving his legacy and honing their combat skills.
Following Tarre’s passing, the Darksaber found a home within a Jedi Temple, revered as a sacred artifact.
However, during the turbulent times of the Old Republic’s decline, members of House Vizsla seized the weapon.
Its ownership subsequently followed the tradition of trial by combat, passing through generations of Mandalorians.
The Path of the Darksaber’s Ownership
Ownership of the Darksaber is defined by a fundamental principle: trial by combat.

Pre Vizsla wielded the Darksaber during a brief confrontation with Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi™.
Later, he sought the assistance of the former Sith Lord Darth Maul™ in his quest to overthrow Mandalore’s leadership. Maul, however, eventually betrayed Pre, claiming the Darksaber for himself.
Maul went on to wield the Darksaber in numerous battles before returning to his homeworld of Dathomir™.

Din’s victory came with challenges. Paz Vizsla, possibly a descendant of Tarre Vizsla, challenged him.
Bo-Katan’s Reclamation:
In season 3 of The Mandalorian, Bo-Katan regains ownership of the Darksaber.
After besting Axe Woves in combat, she solidifies her position as a Mandalorian leader.

The Shifting Ownership to Moff Gideon
Bo-Katan’s loss of the Darksaber took place during the catastrophic Great Purge of Mandalore™.
This tragic event saw the Empire brutally devastate Mandalore, resulting in the deaths of millions and the scattering of the few surviving Mandalorians throughout the galaxy.
The precise circumstances surrounding how the Darksaber fell into Imperial hands remain somewhat shrouded in mystery.
However, over time, the weapon ended up in the possession of Moff Gideon, a high-ranking Imperial officer who would later take command of the remnants of the Empire shortly before the emergence of the New Republic.
Gideon played a pivotal role in overseeing the Great Purge and would subsequently wield the Darksaber as his personal weapon.
